The Eagle and the Boy

The Eagle and the Boy
in the shadow of the sun
an eagle feather fell
fell toward the earth
from an eagle wing
the eagle was
the mother of the egg
in the shadow of the sun
the snake was sinister
looking for the egg
to swallow with his mouth
mouth and forked tongue
the eagle caught the snake
the snake was in her claws
her claws killed the snake
the snake the eagle ate
in the shadow of the sun
on the ancient ground
an eagle feather fell
landed on a stone
was found there by a boy
walking by moon
the moon that rose so full
that day in late september
the five brothers came together with a plan
to kill the bird their brother had
the eagle knew, the eagle had to fly away
she had to go to escape the brothers evil ways
she told the boy his brothers had an evil plan
the boy was very, very sad
in the shadow of the sun
in the shadow of the sun
boy pleaded with the bird
to let him go with her
to fly over the mountain
escape on eagle's wing
so eagle stretched her wings
boy climbed on her back
eagle with the boy
rose up on the wind
never to return
the eagle with the boy
flew up past the moon
landed in the grass
there the eagle changed
into a princess

The Legend of Wandering Spirit
by Travis Oberg
He set out on the trail with all his earthly treasure in his pack
He broke the sacred seal with his father, he's never going back
He says, "Now I have these riches in my hand
I don't expect my tribe to understand..."
He met some friendly strangers who helped him find his fantasy and thrills
They granted him their company, as long as he could pay the bills
"I don't care how long my money lasts
As long as I am living, living fast."
It's taken every fiber of his being to put away his past
He is just a prodigal looking for the truth, looking for the truth
Set his feet a-wandering so far away from you, so far away from you
Help him find his way back home
yippie ki yay, yippie ki-yo, yippie ki yey, yo
Well, his friends they took his dignity and left him by this fire here to die
Says "I miss my home and my family I'm tired and I wanna cry."
He hasn't got a penny to his name, he can't go on cause he can't bear the shame
If he returns to his father he'll be a slave and take the blame
Like memory it haunts him, it's the weight of all that's said and done
Like a nightmare in the daylight, his fear chills him to the bone
The anger of his father was so plain, he had brought disgrace upon his name
All these questions and the heartache can make a man insane
He is just a prodigal looking for the truth, looking for the truth
Set his feet a-wandering so far away from you, so far away from you
Help him find his way back home
yippie ki-yay, yippie ki-yo, yippie ki yey, yo
Now the road that he is walkin' is a-winding and his feet move so slow
His body is weary and it's taken him as far as he can go
Will forgiveness be enough to bring in?
He doesn't even know where to begin...
So his father sees him coming down the road just a boy who lost his way
He's running out to meet him and he cries out "Celebrate!"
His father says that he was lost, but now he's found, "He was dead now he's alive safe and sound."
Now he has his family around him, and his feet back on the ground
He is just a prodigal looking for the truth, looking for the truth
Set his feet a-wandering so far away from you, so far away from you
Help him find his way back home
yippie ki-yay, yippie ki-yo, yippie ki yey, yo

Jezebel
hey silver moon
i can see you're wide awake
I threw my key into the lake
have you seen me now?
can you see me?
How can we be so blind
one road is wide and leads to death
open up your eyes
one narrow gate
lead us back to life
sweet jezebel
I can see
that you don't respect yourself
don't you dare take that out on me
will you go near her now
have you seen me?
How can we be so blind
one road is wide and leads to death
open up your eyes
one narrow gate
leads us back to life
all these tiny thoughts inside my head, i wish you well
remember when you knew what it was like when you were free, so free
How can we be so blind
one road is wide and leads to death
open up your eyes
one narrow gate
lead us back to life

The Secret of Samuel McGee
This is a story of Samuel McGee
Who murdered his brother Elijah
In a house on a hill at the end of the street
With a bullet made out of steel
Time to head for the hills
When they found the body
They questioned the girl
For they knew that Samuel had loved her
She was the daughter of preacher McGill
And was sharing a bed with Sam's brother
A secret that Samuel discovered
Hey everyone, this is my gun
and my name is Samuel McGee
She broke my heart and I shot my kin with a bullet that buried me
In that fateful house at the end of the street
Was Sam's brother and bride-to-be
Samuel came in at a quarter-to-three
There was a shout
Then a shot rang out
Now Samuel is hanging for murder, you see
They found the gun and came looking
That bullet of steel stole his good name away
And his blood went cold
Now his story's been told...
Hey everyone, this is my gun
And my name is Samuel McGee
She broke my heart and I shot my kin with a bullet that buried me

Silver Lining
i'm in the alley i'm on the street
scrounging again for something to eat
they are the archers, and were all thieves
What I don't get is how we play for keeps
Pick a card, any card
I heard you whispering while I played my guitar
They are the liars
Were all cheats
if this was a game, i think i got you beat
you're my silver lining babe I'm on my way
you're my silver lining, i'll be your sail
If i were king, you'd be my queen
lavender blue // dilly dilly
if i had a dollar for every time i've been broke
i'd still be laughing at my own joke
If I had a boat we'd go around the world
looking for the edges, listen to the words that you heard
if hope were an island
then we're all cats
When we leave this place were never coming back
you're my silver lining babe I'm on my way
you're my silver lining, i'll be your sail

Till I Die
I will love you till my dying day
when all is said and done you take my breath away
I will hold you like a little child, rock you in my arms until the night is done here comes the morning
and if i die before i wake i pray the lord my soul to take
and if i wake and i see your face i know that this is real
I will love you till I die
I will keep you far away from harm
just hold me in your arms forever
in your arms hold me close
I will build a shelter in your heart / i'll give you all I can to keep you safe
and if i die before i wake i pray the lord my soul to take
and if i wake and i see your face i know that this is real
i will love you till i die
take my hand and walk with me slowly to a place where i can see clearly
i will lay down this tired old bluegrass song and i will love you
I will love you til i die
i always knew you'd be my girl i knew what i had found in you
it's in the way you touch my face
when i was lost you brought me back

Red & Gold
I had a dog his name was blue
betcha five dollars he's a good dog too
nine pound hammer and a ten penny nail
took another nickel to the wishing well
heard a freight train far away
howling at the moon
autumn leaves were all on fire
wind was cold
the open sky was falling in
all the trees were naked
cats in the garden, sheep in the pen
church bells ringing
house is empty, the barn is cold
i threw the doors off the hinges
wandered north like an ol' coyote
out to the wild blue yonder
All is fair in love and war
I took the long way home last night
All the money's gone again
all the moneys gone, money's gone
eh-i-ooh
red and gold
eh-i-ooh
red and gold
walk on down that road
if i had a horse i'd name her sal
ride in the morning all around my town
just about suppertime back at the stable
gather all my friends round the kitchen table
we'd sing those tired ol gospel songs
sing about love, sing about loss
a log on the fire, the kettle on the stove
telling our stories winding like the old crow
there's an old man looks just like me
living in a deep green valley
if he clap's his hands you can hear the echo
to when i was ten years old
when i was ten years old..
eh-i-ooh
red and gold
eh-i-ooh
red and gold
walk on down that road

The Ballad of Darci Price
Darci sat in the seat next to me on the bus as it whirred off again
I suddenly had a new friend
Speaking as if he had nothing to say he kept telling his stories to me
Speaking so conversationally
He told of books he’d been reading through written on catastrophe
And on life’s deepest mystery
He wondered of science and politics and how many girls I’ve kissed
I thought of the words Darci waited to tell and the words that somehow I’d missed
On the bus that kept stopping and starting again
Like the words Darci tossed all around were the answers that somehow we found
He wondered of science and politics and how many places I’d been
I thought of the words Darci waited to tell to the one that turned out to be me
We answered how strange questions can be……. and why Darci sat in the seat next to me
How our questions can turn eternally to the ways of our maker
To the ways of our mighty maker

Truth

Truth
Truth is big enough
for all of us
to stand inside,
never buy nothing
from a president
who robs from the blind
headlines read the war is ending
we are fighting with ourselves
could we put down our bullet machines
put down our weapons please
we all need wings
love will bring us home
hope will carry on
and Truth, Truth, Truth stands on it's own
Stand for someone
Who has trouble with
staying on their own two feet
it's like a remedy
for a wandering
deadly disease
Hope is moving through our streets
deaf are reaching out to hear, to be healed
would you drink from the fountain
at the foot of the mountain
the way will be made straight
love will bring us home
hope will carry on
and Truth, Truth, Truth never stands alone

Book of Poems
Biding time, reading off these lines from my book of poems
sitting in a blur with a corner on a world that's impossible to show 'em
there are no surprises here and you know it
I jumped into a burn, so cautious and concerned, you watch me go and hold a rescue rope
you've always had that smile i've missed for quite awhile, you've seen the way I lose my reasoning
i just ran out of pretty, pretty things to say
when you're here the shadows fade
innocence and ocean tide
look your trouble in the eyes
great northern lights, in seven quarter time wrapped in reverence and silver ribbon
shining like a star, hanging in the sky back in corners where you never see em
we're back to where we started
refrain:
i need awhile to catch my thoughts
kangaroos and polka dots
you used to be so small
ever o so skeptical
that's not who you are
I hoisted you over
and now you'll see
the morning
can you find the secrets of this life

White Stone
by Travis Oberg Copyright 2012
I've been walking through this world
Wondering where I fit
All I know is I don't know the half of it
Remove this heart of stone
See what I have done
When I go I'll take with me
All these things I can't leave behind, I lose my way
I hear your voice you know my name
You've been waiting with my white stone that you picked for me, picked for me
In another couple minutes this will all be different
I won't have to call you on the phone
We'll open up a window and climb inside
You won't have to face those demons on your own
All I know Is I need you, all that we've been through
I swear it's not too late to head for home
I hear your voice you know my name
You've been waiting with my white stone that you picked for me, you picked for me
Every time I see your face, I watch you smile when you say my name
I follow right behind
Every time I close my eyes I see the sunlight burning in it never makes a sound, makes a sound
Every time I look at you all that we've been through
I swear it's not too late to head for home
Every time I close my eyes, see the sunlight burning in, it never makes a sound, makes a sound

I Am Nothing

I Am Nothing-words and music by travis oberg © 2000
If I could speak in tongues of angels and of men
But have not love it's only noise
If I could fathom all the mysteries of earth
Without love it's pointless
Love is patient
Love is kind
Love never fails
If I could speak a word and make the mountains move
And give all I have to the poor
Without love I have the same I had before
I gain nothing
Love is patient
Love is kind
Love never fails
I am nothing, nothing
Without love
Without love
I am nothing, nothing
Without love
Without love
I am nothing
I know a man who took nails in his hands
And gave his body to the flame
At the right hand of the father he now stands
So love remains
Love is patient
Love is kind
Love never fails

The Summer of 1970

The Summer of 1970
In the summer of 1970
you and your brother drove out to Kansas
Running on half a tank of gasoline
you got lost in the big rock candy mountains
so down along the riverside
where you parked the car
and talked all night
that's when you told him you were scared
and ran your fingers through your long dark hair
instrumental
tiny bubbles on the river
passing in the night
something cold made you shiver
and you swore you'd never love again
at twilight around 5:15
you both walked a mile to the station
to buy gasoline and one last pack of cigarettes
and a fashion magazine
then your brother drove while you were fast asleep
you could climb the highest mountain
swim across the deepest ocean
make your bed down in the canyon
lose yourself
still I chase you like a lover
call an army out to fetch you
every mountain stream
runs into the sea
life is like a vapor
life is like a rising sun

Now’s the time for moving on…
I captured all my thoughts and wrote ‘em down
On this tiny piece of paper
All my thoughts were summed up in a paragraph
But I lost that piece of paper
Now’s the time for moving on
I heard about your poem in a jar
All the skeptics say that it will never work
But I think I know what’s going on
Poetry in glass it’ll catch on fast
Now’s the time for moving on…
I heard we shot a rocket to the moon
And we know the color of the universe
Such a giant leap for man
Tangerine green and turquoise
Now’s the time for moving on…
